70 teams participated in our 1st Top Gun tournament of 2023 which was held in Edenton, NC on May 6, 2023. Anglers were competing for a top prize of over $23,000!
With a stout field of anglers competing in this event, the competition was tough and it would no doubt take a big bag of bass to claim Top Gun in this event.
After the weigh-in, it was Michael Chlomoudis And Powell Kemp who took 1st place honors as they brought over 24 pounds to the Collins Bass for Cash scales! Their bag of bass included multiple fish over 5 pounds including a big fish of 6.08 pounds.
After weigh-in Michael Chlomoudis stated: “The day unfolded quite differently than expected. Our original plan was to spend an hour or so in the creek and then make about a 30-mile run. We fished the creek and had only one small keeper so we strapped everything down and started our run. About 8 miles into the run we made a quick decision to stop and try a small area and take advantage of the cloudy conditions. We caught our first good fish shortly after and it kept us in that area until about 9:30 am. ”
Chlomoudis went on to say they left that area with close to 20 pounds including their biggest fish of the day. “We finished our 30-mile run only to realize we had run into dozens of boats fishing that area. We decided to continue our run and went even farther in hopes of finding an area with less pressure. That decision worked out as we got out of the crowd of boats and we were able to cull our smallest fish 4 times over the next hour.”
Chlomoudis stated his total was run 40 miles one way but the decision to make that long run was the key decision of the day as Powell Kemp was able to catch a 5-pounder later in the day which was just enough to edge out the rest of the field.
When asked how they caught their fish, Chlomoudis stated “We fished shallow all day implementing a mix of different topwater baits and a senko.”
It was quite the week for Powell Kemp, who was fresh off his victory at the Bassmaster Open on Buggs Island just 1 day earlier. The Collins Bass for Cash team would also like to congratulate Powell on his victory at the Open in addition to his and Michal’s win on the Chowan River.
With their win, they were awarded over $31,000 in prizes including the following:
Top Gun 1st Place Prize: $23,332
Triton Gold 1st Place Contingency Prize: $8,000
The Collins Bass for Cash paid out cash prizes to the top 4 teams in this event. It took 22.20 pounds to finish inside the Bass for Cash money line Saturday. You may review the full tournament results below.
